Do’s and Don’ts for Your Next Camping Trip

Going on a family vacation can without a doubt be stressful. There is a lot to plan when it comes to family camping trips, so to make the whole process easier, here are some do’s and don’ts for your next camping trip to keep in mind.

Do: Arrive before nightfall.

Even if you are going to family campgrounds, it is always a good idea to arrive while the sun is up. You will want plenty of light to help you set up, and once you are done you can go and explore your immediate surroundings to help you feel more comfortable in your home away from home.

Don’t: Forget your essentials.

The last thing you will want to do after spending all day traveling and setting up is to run to the store for some forgotten essentials. Make sure to include these items in your packing list: matches, a compass, flashlights, a first aid kit, medications, and bug spray.

Do: Plan your activities out before you go.

A full 87% of campers participated in multiple outdoor activities on their recent trips. So when you are planning your family vacation, prepare everything you need for the activities you want to do. For example, if you want to spend a majority of your time swimming, book your campsite near a lake. Or if you’d like to hike and experience nature, ensure there are trails near your cabin!

Don’t: Eat bland food.

Just because you are camping doesn’t mean you are limited to bland food like crackers or peanut butter and jelly. Get creative with your campfire cooking! With a cast iron pan, some aluminium foil, and some spices you are able to cook eggs, pancakes, saute fish and meat, roast potatoes, and steam vegetables.

Do: Think of Mother Nature.

Keep your carbon footprint in mind during your family vacation. Always dispose of your trash in the proper receptacles and leave with every single item you came with.

Don’t: Leave your food unattended.

Even if you are staying in the relative area of your tent or cabin, it is still important never to leave your food unattended. This is the easiest way to attract unwanted bears, mice, snakes, squirrels, and bugs into your tent! If you are nervous about leaving your food, ask the campground if they have locker storage you can use.

Taking the time to organize your vacation before you leave will make your time under the stars that much more relaxing and pleasant. So go pack your car and off you go!
