Texas camping used to be synonymous with staying in a tent or RV. But Texas camping resorts across the Lone Star State are finding they can accommodate bigger groups and introduce more people to camping by making park model rental accommodations available to them, according to Brian Schaeffer, executive director and CEO of the Texas Association of Campground Owners.
“We’re seeing a dramatic increase in the number of parks that offer rental accommodations,” said Schaeffer, whose organization launched a separate website called TexasCabinRentals.net to help people find campgrounds with park model rental accommodations. Park models are 400-square foot, factory built units that are built on a chassis, like a trailer, but look like cabins or cottages. They come fully furnished with beds and kitchen appliances. Some even have lofts for the kids.
“We’re adding a dozen of them to our park this year,” said Steve Stafford, manager of the Jellystone Park Texas Camping Resort in Burleson, outside of Dallas.
Major campground chains like Jellystone Parks have joined independently owned and operated campgrounds across the country in adding park models as rental accommodations for their guests. Government run campgrounds are also investing in park models.
More information on the park model surge in Texas is available from the Texas Association of Campground Owners, the Crowley-based trade association that represents and markets campgrounds, RV parks and resorts across the Lone Star State. The association’s 2013 RV Travel & Camping Guide to Texas highlights the fact that Texas is a birders paradise and includes detailed information on campgrounds, RV parks and resorts, as well as old Western style maps.
Ahh…Spring is finally here after a long and snowy winter. And the first big holiday weekend of the camping season is right around the corner. Here’s a sampling of the Easter activities at several Jellystone Park™ Campgrounds. Check the calendar at your favorite locations to see what they have planned.
Head to Memphis for a weekend of traditional Easter activities like an egg hunt and egg dyeing. There will also be a spoon race (can you keep your egg on the spoon?!) and a coloring contest.
Jellystone Park in Fremont, Indiana is hosting an Easter Egg-stravaganza complete with an egg hunt and egg decorating. Kids will love to see live baby chicks and bunnies, and the whole family can fill up on free pancakes! And don’t forget your swimsuit because the indoor pool will be open.
For a fun twist, the Jellystone Park in Hagerstown, Maryland is hosting an egg hunt for adults only. The eggs contain valuable prizes like store coupons and game room tickets. The hunt takes place once the sun goes down, which makes it extra competitive!
In the south, Canyon Lake, Texas has a special flashlight hunt for older kids, plus crafts and pancakes. While you’re there, check out the progress on the new swimming pool (set to open this summer) and take a warm dip in the heated indoor pool.
Experience a German Easter Celebration in Frankenmuth, MI , dubbed “Michigan’s Little Bavaria.” Once a year in the area of Franconia Germany one will find many wells, trees, buildings and fountains richly decorated with colored Easter eggs, pine-branch garland and spring flowers. This tradition of decorating Easter Fountains in Germany is over 200 years old and many cities and villages in Franconia Germany still follow this tradition. Since Franconia is the area from which Frankenmuth’s early settlers originated, they mirror the Osterbrunnen tradition.
So clean out the RV, dust off your tent or book a cabin and head to Jellystone Park to celebrate Easter and welcome the warm weather!
Short, cold, snowy winter days make it tough to keep the family active and healthy! Add school closings to the mix, and cooped-up kids (and parents) start to long for the outside weather of the rest of the year. With spring still a long way off, it’s easy to resign yourself to being sluggish – but don’t despair! There are plenty of ways to burn off extra energy, keep the whole family active and even have a great time between now and Daylight Savings Time!
Lace up your skates! Ice skating is a perfect wintertime activity to get the family moving – and have lots of fun doing it. If no one knows how to ice skate, sign up for group lessons and learn something new together. Then there’s roller skating; what better way to revisit your youth than to take the kids to the roller rink? And they even have those awesome disco balls.
Let Rover lead the way. Your dog just may miss the outdoors more than anyone. And he doesn’t care if he gets snow in his coat. Romping with him outside in the snow will warm the kids up in no time and give them a great workout.
Just too dang cold to go outside? Plug into the Wii (or PlayStation, or Xbox.) There are plenty of games out there that will get you moving, but a family favorite is the Let’s Dance series. Great music, groovy moves and perfect for family night.
Don’t forget the old standbys! Sledding, skiing and snowshoeing are wonderful exercise and perfect for making great memories. Our new Jellystone Park in Madison, Maine , with its heated cabins, is a great home base to explore the area rich in winter activities including snowmobiling.
Get your swim on! Find an indoor water park at your YMCA or community center, or just swim laps. Jellystone Park Campgrounds in Frankenmuth, MI and Canyon Lake, TX have indoor swimming pools that create a wonderful wintertime destination.
