The Jellystone Park™ campground in Pittsfield Illinois hosted a bird banding demonstration the weekend of August 2, 2014. Campers learned about identifying birds and the process of banding, which is used for research and migration information. The event was led by Tony Rothering, who is a permitted Bander, and a member of local non-profit organization – Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders. The Pittsfield Illinois campground, also known as Pine Lakes Jellystone Park, is planning a hummingbird exhibit in the spring.

If you are traveling west, the Jellystone Park™ campground in Larkspur, Colorado has a Ranch Camp during the summer that promises to “hand back your kids happy, dirty, tired, and of course, better educated about nature.” Ranch Campers get to feed and care for the park’s goats and horses, do ranch chores, practice archery and more.

In their quest to get kids to unplug, the Jellystone Park™ in Marion, North Carolina introduced the Passport Program that encourages kids to experience various nature-focused activities in order to win prizes. A 1.4 mile geocache hike along a river, scavenger hunts and gem mining in a natural creek further encourage family bonding and outdoor recreation. They also added a “Nuts for Nature” woodland trail featuring owl boxes, a ropes course, tree cookie walkways, log noodles, a butterfly patch and a nature building zone.

Many Jellystone Park™ campgrounds include nature walks as part of their activity programs. Campers learn about trees, birds, animals and principles of Leave No Trace – a Boulder, Colorado-based non-profit organization that develops educational programs to help children and adults take better care of the environment.

Check with your favorite location to see what nature activities they have planned.

Geocache at North Carolina Campground

The challenge is on! See if you can find the 5 caches hidden somewhere along the nature trails that weave throughout the 64-acre Jellystone Park™ Campground in Marion , North Carolina. The trails, which feature river stop-offs and mountain views, will take you along Boo Boo™ River and through lush natural habitats of Yogi Bear’s Outback. Most of the trails are moderate, however Ranger’s Revenge is a steep grade, surely to test the endurance of our campers. Each cache is stocked with different trinkets, compasses and Yogi related gear. Trail seekers are guided by a Geomate Jr. that we rent @ the front desk for $5.

In addition to everyday accessibility, one of the unique elements we feature is the quest for Yogi Bear’s Treasure, this is a scheduled activity that will allow families to work together to seek out clues in each cache to find the Treasure. Each Cache will have a clue as to which cache they need to find next, almost like a micro “Amazing Race” in our own backyard. At the end of the quest, Yogi Bear will appear from the woods and congratulate the victors with gold “Yogi Bear Medallions”

All of our campgrounds have sparkling pools for soaking, splashing and relaxing, but Jellystone Park’s premiere beat-the-heat play place is Yogi Bear’s Water Zone “Splash Ground.” Found at many of our parks, these playgrounds in the water add a new element of fun to the old-fashioned swimming pool. Whether it’s the mushroom shaped showers, squirting water cannons or buckets of water dumped on unsuspecting heads, everyone in the family is sure to keep cool while having a blast. There are even zero-entry levels for the smallest members of the family to safely enjoy. Just a few of the campgrounds featuring this one-of-a-kind water play include Bremen, Georgia; Robert, Louisiana; and Quarryville, Pennsylvania. For a complete listing of the campgrounds with Yogi Bear’s Water Zone, please visit Splashgrounds.

For the more daring members in your family, many of our parks have twisting, turning and gravity defying waterslides. Jellystone Parks such as Mammoth Cave, Kentucky; Woodstock, New Brunswick; Waller, Texas; Marion, North Carolina and Fremont, Wisconsin have super flumes that take riders on a journey with all the thrills of a theme park, giving parents the perfect answer to the perennial kid question, “What can we do now?” For more water sliding fun filled parks, see Waterslides.

On top of all the pools, splashes, and thrilling water slide fun, some of our other Jellystone Parks offer lakes, rivers and streams which include outrageous fun like boating, fishing, rafting, and sandy beaches to wade and swim in. For our list of ways to get wet, see Family Fun.
