Discover North Carolina Family Camping Adventures in the Great Smoky Mountains!

If you’ve found your way to our North Carolina RV parks at Cherokee, Golden Valley, or Marion – you will be excited to know that the Great Smoky Mountains are just in your backyard. As the southern tail of the Appalachian Mountains, this distinct range separates the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. Deriving its name from it’s smoky like fog appearance that blankets the mountains, the Great Smoky Mountains get their name because of the heavy dew and water evaporation that formulates clouds blanketing the surface of the mountains.

See the Mountains by RV

You’ll discover that North Carolina family camping can be fun all year long. The Great Smoky Mountains plays host to auto tours with pull off sites that provide panoramic views of the National Park. Inexpensive booklets can be bought at various points of your drive around the mountains as you stop and view the wildlife from points like Newfound Gap Road, Roaring Fork, Cataloochee and more. Being that the Great Smoky Mountains are the most visited national forest in the country, they have worked hard to preserve the wildlife and ecosystem. Disrupting the ecosystem is a federal crime and park officials have asked visitors to stay far away from engaging wildlife and disrupting plant life. There is plenty of wildlife to view and experience from the comfort of your car or the road, so please be aware of the safety of yourself and the wildlife.

Explore the Local Rivers & Falls

If you’ve settled into your family campsite at Cherokee, Golden Valley, or Marion – why not spend the day hunting down some of the GORGEOUS waterfalls that run year round in the Great Smoky Mountains? The Great Smoky Mountains get anywhere between 55 and 85 inches of rain every year which is more than enough to supply the flowing streams and waterfalls with a year round supply of water. Your family will love exploring the nearby falls such as Mingo Falls (which is close to Jellystone Park at Cherokee ), Abrams Falls, Indian Creek/Tom’s Branch Falls, Rainbow Falls and many more! As you pass through the mountains on your family RV camping trip, stop and pick up a guide that can help you find these natural beautiful sites.

Family Photo Opportunities

We recommend that you take your camera with you whenever you go to the Great Smoky Mountains. For those that enjoy capturing their memories through the art of photography, the Great Smoky Mountains are a perfect picturesque backdrop. The natural architecture of trees, wildflowers, streams and wildlife paint a picture that is worth far more than a thousand words. Another photogenic element to the Great Smoky Mountains is the collection of historic buildings and establishments. There are about 80 different structures scattered throughout the forests and mountains such as cabins, churches, barns, mills and more. These buildings have been maintained and preserved to capture the essence of the time in which they were built.

The amount activities to do in the Great Smoky Mountains are endless. Conveniently located within reach of our North Carolina Jellystone Park™ at Cherokee, Golden Valley, or Marion – your family camping adventures await you.
