A Big Bear Hug for our New North Carolina Campground

The former Rutledge Lake campground in Fletcher, NC is the newest member of the Yogi Bearfamily!  Perfectly situated just outside of Asheville in the breathtaking mountain scenery of western North Carolina, the campground was named National Small Park of the Year by the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC) in 2006.  It's a great home base for exploring the many attractions in this popular area, from the Biltmore Estate and the Smoky Mountains to Chimney Rock and the Cherokee Casinos.

Onsite, the year-round park boasts 70 campsites and three camping cabins.  Families will enjoy the heated pool, nature trail, first-class fishing and canoeing, paddle boats, basketball and horseshoes.  Starting in April, planned activities include regular gospel music concerts, potluck dinners and more.  And if you must stay plugged into the outside world while you visit, Rutledge Lake offers free WiFi for your laptop.

While you're there, don't forget to savor a scoop of a local favorite:  Blue Bell ice cream.  Beloved by generations of ice cream fans in the southeastern part of the country, it will quickly become a favorite for your family, too.

Kids Need Valentine's Love Too!
Heart Day is around the corner, with all its pink and red and declarations of devotion. Here's a cute craft idea for the smallest kids in the house (or grandkids!) It's easy, tasty and your favorite preschooler will be so proud to present the finished product to someone he loves.  Don't forget to supervise - he'll still need some help.

Candy Necklace

You'll need:

  • Plastic wrap
  • Individually wrapped candies
  • Colorful ribbon

Unroll three feet of plastic wrap and cut in half lengthwise.  Place candies or groups of candies spaced three inches apart.  Roll the plastic over and tie bows between each candy, using six-inch pieces of ribbon.  Tie the two ends of the plastic wrap together and cover the knot with another ribbon.
